As a coach, I often help my clients navigate the same challenges I encounter in my own work—establishing healthy boundaries in business relationships. One common issue is dealing with clients who test limits. It’s frustrating, I know. But as a business owner, it’s your responsibility to handle these situations effectively. After all, your business operates on integrity and professionalism, and that means maintaining clear boundaries.

Recently on LinkedIn, I shared a brief response to this topic:

Dealing with a client who pushes session boundaries. How can you assert your limits effectively?

However, I realized many in my sphere of influence could benefit from a deeper dive into the strategies I recommend. Have you ever offered an informational or introductory session only to have a client stretch the timeframe you initially set? Or maybe you’ve been in a meeting where the client started pulling in topics that required additional services beyond the original scope? If so, you’re not alone.

Here’s a simple truth: clients typically push session boundaries when limits and expectations aren’t clearly communicated. But instead of seeing this as a setback, I encourage you to view it as an opportunity—a chance to refine your session structure and establish clear requirements moving forward. Let’s explore how you can address this issue with confidence and professionalism.

For the current situation, it’s critical to address the boundary issue promptly and professionally. Here’s a step-by-step approach:

  1. Pause and Refocus: At the moment the boundary is being tested, take a calm and assertive moment to redirect the conversation. Gently remind the client of the session’s original purpose and acknowledge the time spent so far.
  2. Recap and Redirect: Briefly recap what has been accomplished during the session. If the discussion has strayed from the original scope or if time is running out, acknowledge this by saying something like, “We’ve covered a lot today, and I want to ensure we stay aligned with our session goals. Since we’re nearing the end of our scheduled time, let’s wrap up and prepare for where we’ll pick up next time.”

  4. Set Clear Expectations for the Future: Before ending the session, communicate any new boundaries or requirements. For example, you might say, “To ensure we make the most of our sessions moving forward, I’ll send over a brief outline of the session structure and time limits so we’re both aligned.” This establishes clarity without blaming the client.
  5. Stay Firm, Yet Flexible: As a business owner, it’s crucial to maintain your boundaries while offering solutions that serve both you and your client. Remember, setting and asserting limits isn’t about being rigid—it’s about preserving the integrity of your business and creating the best possible outcomes for your clients.

By handling the situation with professionalism and clarity, you demonstrate your commitment to your clients while reinforcing your role as a business leader.

With clear intention,
